Bigo Live – Broadcasting Everywhere

Bigo Live has gained sudden popularity for less than a year. The project was launched by a Singaporean team of developers in March 2016 and received 40+ patents in VoIP tech. Users can broadcast whatever they want, from Vlogs to Game streams to unlimited audience and collect local ‘currency’ (gifts) to exchange it for real money.

Interface – 7/10

The app is designed according to tastes of its target audience: teens. The logo is very expressive: a cartoonish white-turquoise dinosaur showing what this all is about. The lead app page looks colourful and attractive, but somewhat childish. There are stickers, animation, nicely rounded elements and buttons. The Bigo Live navigation is simple and user-friendly. Perhaps, this audience-oriented interface is not bad at all, but for potential 25+ users (like me) it looks like something from elementary school. My rating is 7/10.

Features – 4/10

The app contains everything a user can expect for self-broadcasting: easy-to-use menu, powerful technological background, a wide range of features and perks:

  • Multi-platform support (Android, iOS and other);
  • Opportunity to start a broadcast with any content from the smartphone;
  • Desktop version;
  • Multi-guest video chats;
  • Game streams;
  • Real-time communication – comments, gifts, opportunity to join;
  • Geographic search – shows users nearby;
  • App Gamification – collect beans and exchange into money.

This functionality is more than enough for such kind of app. There are a few slight troubles, such as impossibility to use it simultaneously on several devices and such.

And a few large troubles:

  • No ways to make the account private or limit the number of people see your broadcast;
  • No adult content filters –basically it looks like a virtual nightclub for now.
  • No age verification – younger teens and even children can participate in all that.

If you google for ‘bigo live videos’, the top results include partially naked young women dancing or doing weird things to get more beans. In my opinion, the mission of the app failed. This app may promote vanity and self-commodification. Good intentions don’t always lead to good outcome. Eventually, we have what we have.

Performance and user experience – 7/10

Analyzing the Bigo Live ratings in Google Play and App Store, I can say most of its users are fully satisfied with app user experience and performance. It doesn’t lag, provides high-quality video and real-time communication, builds social networking, helps to find new virtual and offline friends in a few taps due to geolocation search. However, 3 points are off due to the abovementioned morality issues. The app should either include more blockers for inappropriate content or a reliable age verification for new community members.

Devices Compatibility – 8/10

Bigo Live is an app for most of Android mobile devices. The app requires Android version 4.0 and up, which is installed on most of the modern mobile devices. Also, it works on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, in case the iOS is 7.0 and later. The app is supported by Windows Phone (Windows 10 Mobile, Windows Phone 8.1, Windows Phone 8). We understand such requirements are technically necessary, as video broadcasting requires a lot of platform functionality, but so many users are left off the board – so 8/10.

The Verdict

BIGO Live has skyrocketed on the market of specific social networks in 2017 and gave users a chance to get a fast and effective way to communicate ideas, events and performances and become popular. Multi-guest-streams in the latest version created a new era for vlogging and broadcasting and have built an interactive youth community with similar hobbies. Our team hopes that the dark side of the app with sensitive 18+ content, no ‘face-control’ and its effortless recording by anyone won’t win this tough battle.
